About CrownHop

CrownHop began after watching my partner drive Wanaka to Queenstown every day for work — solo, five days a week. The trip made sense. Doing it alone didn't. It was draining, and when fuel prices jumped it started to hurt the bank account too.

Plenty of other people were making the same run at the same time. Everyone in their own car. Same road, same cost, same empty seats. That felt like a problem worth solving.

CrownHop is an NZTA-licensed transport platform connecting passengers with verified drivers already heading their way. That licence is about how the platform operates — it does not mean NZTA endorses individual drivers or individual journeys.

We also know many Kiwis are cautious about sharing a ride with someone they don't know yet. Fair enough. CrownHop is built to lower that barrier — verified drivers, clear pricing, and chat so you can coordinate before you book — so the upside of carpooling beats the awkwardness.

We wanted transport to feel simple: see who's going your way, know what you'll pay, message before you commit. Running costs split fairly — not a taxi fare, not a guess at “petrol money.”

Time overseas makes it obvious how far New Zealand can lag on public transport — and how much that depends on politics and priorities. CrownHop isn't a replacement for buses or trains, but it's a practical way to link towns when timetables don't match real life.
